Youth Media Awards

January is an exciting time for teen literature readers as the Youth Media Awards are announced at the American Library Association Midwinter Meeting. This last Monday, at 7:45 am, the announcements began with an audience that filled a grand ball room. With the anticipation we see at the Oscars, winners are announced amid cheers and applause. Alex Awards

The Alex Awards are given annually to ten books written for adults that have special appeal to young adults.

William C. Morris Award

The Morris Award honors a book written for young adults by a first-time, previously unpublished author.

The winner of the 2009 Morris Award is A Curse Dark As Gold by Elizabeth C. Bunce, published by Arthur A. Levine Books, an imprint of Scholastic, Inc.

Odyssey Award

This award honors the producer of the best audiobook produced for children and/or young adults, available in English in the United States. Co-administered with ALSC.

Michael L. Printz Award

This award honors excellence in literature written for young adults.

Looking for something to do after school? Come to the library on Wednesday, January 14, after school until 5 pm for Plugged and Unplugged. We have Internet, video games, board games, refreshments, friends, and fun!

Following Plugged and Unplugged, we have our Animanga Club meeting, 5-7 pm. This one will be a back to basics meeting, talking about manga orders, previewing anime, brainstorming meeting ideas, and RAMEN, of course!

Bits of news for you....

The Twilight Poster drawing is tomorrow! The Twilight movie is out on November 21!

We had 35 teens at Plugged and Unplugged this week. Nearly 1600 teens have come to programs at the library so far this year!

47 teens completed the Teen Read Week Survey and received a prize this month.

What did you miss?
We watched Ironman, made Gocks, played Rock Band and Super Smash Brothers, learned Japanese calligraphy, had snacks, surfed the Net, won prizes, read books, magazines, graphic novels, and had a lot of fun with friends. All at the library!

You can celebrate Teen Read Week all of October at the Coshocton Public Library. Check out the following:

1. The main display case features teen events at the library from the past year. See photos and kanji created by the Animanga Club.

2. Enter the drawing at the main desk for the Twilight poster on display. For Teens Only!

3. Come to the library on October 15th for spooky movies after school and vampire cupcakes! 2-5 pm.

4. Make a GOCK, a goth sock puppet, on October 16th after school. 2-5 pm.

5. Fill out a Teen Read Week Survey and turn it in at the reference desk for a cool prize!

the Adoration of Jenna Fox

I stayed up last night reading by flashlight (no power at my house!) this new book, The Adoration of Jenna Fox. It has an interesting cover, a hand with a blue butterfly on it, and I had heard a little bit about it. Jenna is 17 when she wakes up from a coma. She was in an accident over a year ago and her memory is coming back in odd bursts, like remembering an event that happened when she was a baby or something as uninteresting as buying socks, in detail. It isn’t until she cuts her hand that she begins to understand what has really happened to her… inside her hand is blue Bio Gel and artificial bones and tendons! How much and what part of us makes us human?

Summer reading events are coming to a close this weekend with the annual Pool Party at the Aquatic Center in Lake Park. Pick up your ticket today or tomorrow if you participated in the summer reading events for teens at the library. The pool part will be Sunday, July 27, 7:30 to 9 pm. The final grand prize drawings for $50 in Coshocton County Bucks will be at the Pool Party, so don't miss it!

Next week the Friends of the Library are setting up the meeting room for the big Annual Book Sale, so...
1) On Monday, if you signed up to help set up the book sale, please be here by 4 pm.
2) We won't have Plugged and Unplugged on Wednesday, July 30, because the room is being used for the booksale.
3) We need help Saturday, August 2, at 1 pm to help tear down the booksale.

The Friends of the Library are the folks you raise money so we can have programs (with food!) at the library. Helping out a couple hours for the booksale is a great way for us to say thank you!

The first week of August will be shuffled a bit, too. The Teen Writers Club meeting is moved to August 12 at 4 pm.
The Animanga Club meeting will be moved to August 13 at 5 pm.
Cathy will be helping Nate with Plugged and Unplugged on Wednesday, August 6.
